Tung Umolomo -- A Shutting of the Mouth", is he latest novel from the pen of talented author Billie Williams. It tells of the cultural struggle taking place in South Africa today. Several entities are at loggerheads with each other, each in turn trying to forge the country in their own image.
David Hemingway is a man with a past similar to that of South Africa. He has lost everything that he held dear. His family, his sense of being that filled his life with purpose. Now like the African country he is seeking to rebuild his life from the turmoil.
Striking out to bring some good into the world, David takes up the vocation of teaching. He hopes that by embarking on this new career he can forget his past. Formally a marine and FBI agent, he is seeking refuge from the world of violence and crime. The future as he sees it is in educating young minds, to give them a chance to escape the ignorance that surrounds them.
David begins his new life at the village of Ewando outside of the South African port of Durban. He is to open a one-room classroom for the children of the village. The school and the village clinic, run by a Peace Corp Officer, Doctor Alcina Danvers has a common benefactor. Ivan Vyachenkov, president of the Durban Trust Bank.
Vyachenkov is a man who likes to be in control. He is the type of person that does not easily tolerate failure. To him being the manipulator is everything and nothing is too bad to gain the prize.
Almost as soon as David arrives at the village of Ewando he felt that he was not welcome. The village diviner, Zemtokayeh, declares that the white mans help is not welcome at Ewando. Since the Xhosa people came into existence, their traditions had served them well. Therefore they had no need to adopt the ways of the white man in order to survive.
Outside forces were working against the wishes of the Xhosa to live the traditional life of their forefathers. Change was brewing in the African continent, which the Xhosa could not control. The indigenous masses were restless for a new way.
Evil stalked the countryside and would not be satisfied until it gained its objectives. People in high places wanted the Xhosa out of Ewando at any price. Nothing nor anyone would be allowed to thwart their scheme for gaining immense riches.
David Hemingway and Doctor Alcina Danvers were expendable. They represented an obstruction to Vyachenkov that must be removed. The banker had a past that owed an allegiance to a dark force outside of Africa. That force would not be pleased if its plans were thrown into disarray.
Billie Williams has crafted a story that is fast paced and packed with intrigue. It is a tale that entertains and educates as it stimulates ones senses. This is one book that is not to be missed.
