Trust Linked to Employee Retention in TalentKeepers Research

A comprehensive study by global employee retention firm TalentKeepers, encompassing more than 40,000 workers and 350 organizations, establishes a clear link between leadership actions, particularly trust building, and unwanted employee turnover, as reported in a feature article in T+D Magazine.

Maitland, Florida - March 19, 2004. Front-line leaders and their skill in building a climate of trust is an organizations best defense against unwanted turnover. This is one of several key outcomes of a year-long longitudinal study by TalentKeepers, the global employee retention firm, as reported in the March issue of T+D magazine. The comprehensive study, encompassing over 350 organizations, verifies that what employees want in a leader is one whom they can trust, treats them fairly as individuals, and shows care and concern for them.

Competitive pay, benefits, and typical HR programs, while helpful, no longer are enough to keep workers from shopping for their next opportunity. "Most workers, particularly those on the front line where it really matters, feel as though leaders have ultimate power in the workplace--power over pay, promotions, favorable assignments, job security, and more. Peoples satisfaction, productivity, and engagement hinge most on someone who treats them fairly and whom they can trust," says Richard Finnegan, Chief Client Services Officer for TalentKeepers. Adds Finnegan, "Responsibility and accountability for retaining talent needs to move out to the front lines and into the hands of leaders."

One of the problems organizations will face is training leaders in retention skills, like how to build trust. An unavoidable demographic time bomb fueled by aging baby boomers and lower birth rates will result in a significant shortage of workers, and yet, the fundamental assumptions that guided many of the philosophies and teachings of leadership have been largely based on the availability of an ever-expanding and perpetually better-educated talent pool. This "perfect storm" of fewer workers combined with a growing skills gap outlines why retention will be a critical business strategy in the future.

"Being a 'trust builder consistently surfaces as what employees most desire and expect of their immediate leader," said Finnegan. "Given what we now know about the potential labor shortage and the importance of trust to employee retention, leaders are likely the secret weapon in keeping valued talent longer."
