GradPAC Chairman Shawn N. Olds announced the appointment of William F. Murdy to the organizationÂs Executive Board today.
ÂWe are honored to have Bill join our Executive Board and are excited by the sage advice he can certainly provide to our organization as a man who has distinguished himself as a combat veteran, scholar, educator and accomplished business leader over the last 40 years, said Chairman Olds. ÂJust as Bill has enjoyed overwhelming success in the business arena for more than three decades, we hope thatÂwith his invaluable vision and assistanceÂwe can bring equal success to those service academy graduates whom seek federal elected office.Â
Murdy graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1964. He currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comfort Systems USA, an $800 million company providing heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) installation and services in the commercial and industry sectors nationwide. Comfort Systems operates over 75 locations across the country and employs more than 5,000 people.
ÂBill Murdy was my roommate at West Point, and he had a record of exemplary academic, athletic and military achievements at the Academy, said Eugene R. Sullivan (USMA Â64), former federal judge and current GradPAC executive board member. ÂBillÂs record as a cadet was merely a foreshadowing of his future---Airborne Ranger, highly decorated veteran in 3 combat tours, Harvard Business School graduate and CEO of two New York Stock Exchange listed corporations.Â
From July 1999 until July 2000, Murdy served as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Club Quarters, a privately owned and rapidly expanding chain of membership hotels catering to corporate travelers in major cities throughout the United States and Europe. Prior to his leadership at Club Quarter, he served as Chairman, President and CEO of LandCare USA, Inc. for two years. Under MurdyÂs exemplary leadership, Landcare grew to be the nationÂs largest commercial landscape and tree services company, with $500 million in annual revenues, before merging with ServiceMaster in 1999.
Beginning in 1989, Murdy was President and Chief Executive Officer of General Investment and Development, a large privately held, diversified real estate operating company for twelve years; and before that, he served as both Managing General Partner of the Morgan Stanley Venture Capital Fund and President of its associated management company. From 1974 to 1981, he served in a number of other corporate leadership positions to include chief operating officer of Pacific Resources, a Fortune 500 company. In 1973, Murdy provided energy and industrial sector policy analysis in the Executive Office of the President.
From 1964 to 1974, Murdy served in the U.S. Army to include two tours of duty in Vietnam as a combat engineer where he was awarded three bronze stars, a combat tour in the Dominican Republic and a three-year tenure as a professor of economics at West Point, leaving active duty service as a Major.
Murdy holds a MBA from the Harvard Business School, and he is a member of the board four other corporations including UIL Holdings Corp., NetVersant Solutions, Compact Power, Inc. and Simulis.
Additionally, he is a member of the board of directors of the Business Executives for National Security and the National Advisory Board of the Boy Scouts of America. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a board member of the National Defense University Foundation, a trustee Emeritus of the Association of Graduates of West Point and a member of the Corporate Council of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation. Murdy is also a former member of the World Board of Directors of the USO and the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Military Academy.
Murdy and his wife, Mary, have two grown children and currently reside in Houston, Texas.
