Dean Tong, primary author of A FATHER'S WORST NIGHTMARE: The Dean Tong Story, his captivating memoir, has some strong words for our child protectors this April - National Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month - "Report and investigate child abuse, but first do no harm," Tong implored.
"While all of us a moral or legal responsibility to protect our most precious resource, our children, it's not OK to err on the side of caution - on the side of children - because, frankly, we're making too many mistakes," Tong warned. "While the incidence of sexual child abuse has decreased (Finkelhor, 2004) the number of reports have increased, and that tells me too many unfounded cases are clogging the system and their ability to do what they are charged to do - protect kids at-risk," Tong stated. "Treating non-abused children as truly molested victims is not in their best interests," Tong added.
Tong's memoir, which if published would be his fourth work on the controversial subject of false child abuse allegations, could be his most important to date. The book not only has potential to be made into a TV movie, but also could exact public policy changes relative to child protection.
