HTS Enterprise Plays Leading Role on Nuclear Issues At Minority Energy Conference
HTS Enterprise LLC President Garry Harris speaks on Nuclear issues at the 2004 American Association of Blacks in Energy Conference.
(PRWEB) April 3, 2004 --AABE 27th National Conference, New Orleans, LA, February 26, 2004: HTS Enterprise President, Garry A. Harris, was a featured speaker at the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) National Conference today. A member of a three-speaker panel for the Nuclear and Hydrogen Fuels session, Mr. Harris was joined by Donald Hintz, President of Entergy, and Charles Pardee, Senior Vice President Nuclear Services, Exelon Corporation. Entergy is the 2nd largest nuclear utility in the US, and Exelon, with a nuclear fleet of 10 stations and 17 reactors generating over 17,000 MW of electricity, is the nations largest nuclear utility and was named the number one producer of electrical power in the world.
The speaker panel covered advances and issues in the nuclear industry, including new nuclear reactor design, and the future generation of hydrogen using such technology. Hydrogen, as a fuel source, is becoming increasingly attractive in order to limit the generation of greenhouse gases, minimize the effects of global warming and inhibit the release and harmful effects of other pollutants. Projections of the future hydrogen economy is expected to require nearly eighteen times more hydrogen than is presently available or produced. Currently, construction of new fossil based generation is ongoing, but several new nuclear power stations are expected to be built by the end of the decade fueled by the need for electricity. New construction of advanced reactors, capable of producing both electricity and hydrogen, is expected within the next 15 to 20 years.
Presenting the advances and issues in regard to producing hydrogen with nuclear energy, Mr. Harris related information covering the optimum GT-MHR (Gas Turbine- Modular Helium-High Temperature Cooled Reactor) reactor design, fuels, economics environmental and reactor safety considerations for these processes. Use of efficient, advanced reactors to generate cost effective hydrogen by electrolysis, or chemical splitting of water using heat from the reactor, and the environmentally friendly results of these processes (Hydrogen, Oxygen and water) were among the points he presented to the audience.
The AABE conference was attended by nearly five hundred of the nations highest-ranking African Americans in the energy industry representing nuclear petroleum, natural gas and renewable energy sources. Issues discussed during the five day conference included electrical grid reliability, hydrogen economy, advanced nuclear reactors and the nuclear renaissance, natural and petroleum issues, human resource management, energy legislative issues update, radioactive material waste management and transportation issues. Additional topics included environmental justice and sustainable development, energy related sourcing and entrepreneurial opportunities, solar technologies and hydro-generation issues and new power plant construction issues.
Mr. Harris, a twenty-five year veteran of the nuclear industry, has consulted to or performed engineering, licensing, quality control and assurance, operations, spent fuel transportation and storage, and plant maintenance activities at nearly 70% of nuclear plant sites in the US. His professional experience spans various positions at Westinghouse Electric, Institute for Nuclear Power Operations and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Recently appointed to two American Nuclear Society (ANS) national committees and Vice Chairman of the ANS Section in Atlanta, Mr. Harris also sits on committees for the American Society for Quality Executive Environmental and Energy Divisions. He is Chairperson for the Atlanta section of the AABE BEAM (Black Energy Awareness Month) Committee, which is responsible for increasing the awareness of energy related career and technical opportunities among minority youth. Mr. Harris holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Virginia, a MS in Technology Management and MS in Quality Assurance.
