New Technology for Jackup Rig Construction

OFFSHORE SOURCE announced today the release of their patented jacking system for production. The system saves $10 million in cost to jackup rig vessel builders and operators.

(PRWEB) April 4, 2004 --Jacking Systems New Technology

Offshore Source, a Designer and Manufacture of Offshore Drilling support equipment and a Texas company located in Dallas-Fort Worth announced today that their developed design has cleared the US patent office and is ready to offer for sale, it is the latest in state of the art jacking systems Hydrajack" rig elevation system. Now that our due diligence is complete with the patent office and the overseas fillings as well, we are ready to go to our customers and offer a rig elevation system that updates the industry to a more current technology than the 1970s art that has virtually not changed for the last 35 years" said Douglas Hines, President of Offshore Source.

The Hydrajack Jacking System has been designed and patented with over 80 years of combined experience from the Offshore marine-drilling equipment markets. Drawing from those experiences we have taken the best of rig elevation systems and produced the next generation of jacking systems for the harshest of environments and at considerably less cost than conventional Rack & Pinion systems of the past.

In the Hydrajack design we are able to match exactly the requirements for lift capacity,"50-2500 kips per pinion plus" be it a lift-boat or the largest combined drilling --production platform conceived or being considered. The scaleable design offers the safest method of lift, hydraulic cylinder where the load is always positively supported and with not available before in cylinder designs continuously lifting", no starts and stops. The system is variable speed so exact position placement of the platform is not a problem.

An added feature of the Hydrajack system is that the design is a combined lift and lock-off system", no extra lock-off system is required to maintain position or ride out the storm. Considering the potential storm conditions, we are able to soften the blow or storm force induced loads by activation of the storm mode controls that act like a shock absorber to reduce the loads to the vessel its self. The control system can even tell you in real-time what the load is at each leg, and send it remotely via rig communications to the operations office. The systems use the latest in state of the art PLC controls systems, faster and more reliable than controls used in the past. The PLC displays in real time all the systems operating conditions, combine system diagnostics.

The systems will not only cost less in initial capital expense as compared to conventional rack and pinion but it will reduce the total rig vessel cost as well. The design allows the rack material to be the less expensive 50-60 ksi range material and at generally half the width of a conventional rack & pinion system. This results in less weight and less cost for the leg construction and reduced overall cost of materials. Added to this savings the design does not use rolling friction, as with pinion gears, on the surface of the rack, the rack will last virtually for the life of the leg.

Another benefit of the reduced weight of the legs is that of lowering the center of gravity of the overall vessel adding to stability and the capability of extending the legs for deeper water depths than is now available.

All this adds up to a technical leap for the jackup vessel capabilities now and in the future, the following is a table making the case comparison of a 36 pinion x 1000 kip system and an equal Hydrajack System in terms of performance and cost.

Features and Benefits
•Less Overall Rig Construction Cost & Considerable Less Cost vs. Rack & Pinion
•60 ksi rack material used, Less Initial Construction & Replacement Cost Later
•Wear on Rack is virtual non-existent...........No rolling friction as with Rack & Pinion
•Lock-off System is Integral part of the System... No Added Cost
•Continuous Jacking Operation with Variable Speed Capabilities
•Scaleable Up & Down, 100 kip -- 2500 kip and Higher...   Larger the Load less Cost
•Less overall Wt. vs. Lift Capability & Less Overall Area in Deck Space Required
•Lower Center of Gravity
•Highly Reliable & Dynamic PLC Control Capability
•Continuous Load Monitoring, at Lift, Parked & During Storm Conditions
•Remote Diagnostics & Remote Monitoring, Easily Serviced
•Retro-fit-able to preexisting Rigs of All Designs

Total savings vs rack and Pinion $9.7 Million USD

Offshore Sources design has been selected by the ASME Petroleum Division as one of five designs to be featured at the Offshore Technology Conference 2004 for the 21 st annual Woelfel Best Mechanical Engineering Achievement Award" with winner to be announced on May 5th at the annual ASME Industry Leadership Award Luncheon. The design will be featured at the luncheon with graphic displays.

Our design will be on display within booth no. 4149 as an associate company display and illustrate the basic design and its capabilities. Offshore Source is a GE Fanuc Solution Provider and provides PLC controls and power distribution systems for the offshore industry in association with GE Fanuc.

We are ready, our patented system is completely developed ready for supply for new construction or it can be a retro-fit to existing designs as well. Our latest publication explains how we can provide our customers with the next generation in Jacking Systems Hydrajack" and we hope to introduce the industry to our latest design at this years OTC." Hines went on to say.
