Mother's Day 2004 to Be a Hi-Tech Holiday

Interest in Digital Consumer Electronic Products on the Rise among Female Consumers

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 26, 2004 -- With women spending approximately $55 billion on consumer electronics products each year, mothers across the country are likely crossing their fingers, hoping the usual homemade cards and crafts will be accompanied by consumer technology products this Mother's Day. According to research, interest from female consumers in digital products is on the rise, with women initiating 75 percent of all CE purchases.

If Mom doesn't receive that DVD player, digital camera or high-definition television (HDTV) as a gift this Mother's Day, chances are she's likely to purchase it herself. Contrary to what many may believe, women aren't buying consumer electronics products primarily as gifts for others. According to consumer research, 71 percent of women said their most recent technology purchase was for themselves.
DVD players, digital cameras, high-definition television (HDTV) and digital camcorders top the list of technology products female consumers are looking to buy. Out of non-owners expecting to make a purchase sometime in the future, two-thirds of women (66 percent) are interested in purchasing a DVD player; 62 percent are interested in purchasing digital cameras.

What's more, 55 percent of women are interested in purchasing an HDTV and more than half (54 percent) are looking to buy a digital camcorder.
Research also clearly indicates the interest of female consumers in purchasing technology products is on a steady rise. Compared to 2003, women's interest in DVD players has risen by seven percentage points and interest in digital cameras is up nine percentage points. In just one year, interest of female consumers in HDTV has jumped 16 percentage points from 39 percent in 2003, while interest in digital camcorders has increased 14 percentage points.

The interests of women consumers extend beyond the digital products that now have a strong foothold in the marketplace - such as DVD players and wireless phones - and are embracing new emerging technologies, particularly in the digital audio arena. In fact, 59 percent of online women are interested in digital radio. Fifty-one percent are interested in purchasing satellite radio, if the service fees were incorporated into their car payments. DVD-Audio also generated significant attention from online women with more than half (52 percent) expressing interest in the new home audio format.

And the percentage of female early adopters continues to grow. Thirty-five percent of online women will usually purchase a new product on the market when it first debuts or soon after.
