Court Reporting Firm Handles Hearings For Free in Same Sex Marriage Lawsuit

First Hearing Tomorrow In Mary Li, et al v. State of Oregon

Portland, OR (PRWEB) April 17, 2004 --The first hearing in the most high profile case in the nation takes place tomorrow at the Multnomah County Courthouse. Law firms for both plaintiffs and defendants have joined together to select lipka.com, inc. to handle transcription of all hearings and depositions in the first same sex marriage case: Mary Li, et al v. State of Oregon. In an unusual and surprising twist, lipka.com has offered to provide their court reporting services for free.

"Were just trying to do our civic duty and support the many law firms on this case who are donating their legal services," said the court reporting firms president, Michelle Lipka. Weve handled depositions for free in all sorts of pro bono matters over the years, from patent and trademark issues to death row prisoners rights. Normally these law firms would have to bear the costs of disbursements themselves. Its a meaningful way to say thank you for the other paying work they send our way, instead of sending a restaurant guide or a tacky plastic trifle for their desk at the end of the year!" She went on: Besides, this is the most important case on any docket in the Country right now. Were honored to be a part of the process."

Ms. Lipka went on: It is important to note that lipka.com is paying our freelance court reporters to handle transcription on this case, but the firm will absorb this expense as opposed to passing it on to the parties involved." Ms. Lipka went on to explain: all of our court reporters maintain freelance status to remain completely impartial as to the outcome of all cases we handle."

Hon. Justice Frank Bearden is the presiding judge and has graciously opened his courtroom to the public and the press. The hearing starts at 9:00 AM and will last exactly two and a half hours. After the hearing the parties to the action will be allowed to give statements to the press right in the courtroom. lipka.com will also provide the transcript of the hearing and parties statements to all members of the press who request one.

lipka.com is a nationwide court reporting firm with offices in New York City and Portland Oregon, covering depositions all points in between. The firm also gives 10% of its annual profits to ovarian cancer research, and is 100% female owned and operated. I like to say were the 'feel good court reporting choice," Ms. Lipka joked. If Oprah and Ben & Jerry got together and opened a court reporting firm, I imagine it would be run like lipka.com!"
