Huntington, NY (PRWEB) April 26, 2004 --Two of the Huntington YMCAs most committed volunteers will be honored by the YMCA of Long Island at its Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner, May 19, 2004, at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury. John Storck, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Managers of the Huntington YMCA, has been named 2004 Adult Volunteer of the Year and Melinda Harvey, a senior at Walt Whitman High School, was named 2004 Youth Volunteer of the Year.

Mr. Storck, owner of Huntington Jeep Chrysler-Hyundai, first joined the Huntington Y in the mid-1950s and learned to swim in the then brand new Norton Pool. The Y helped me overcome my fear of the water," he said, and prepared me for my great hobby -- sailing."

According to Huntington YMCA Executive Director Edward Moffett, John was recruited to the YMCA Capital Campaign Committee in 1990 and helped raise the funds that built the Albicocco Pool. Shortly after that, he followed his father onto the Board of Managers and has been an active member ever since."

Elected Chairman of the Board in 2003, Mr. Storck has been instrumental in promoting and developing the Ys Capital Improvement Plan. He has helped established the Capital Campaign Committee to lead the fund-raising efforts for a new 18,600 sq. ft. Youth and Family Activity Center.

John and his wife, Colette, live in Huntington and are the parents of four children, all of whom learned to swim at the Y and three of whom attended the Ys Nursery School.

Melinda Harvey has been part of the Huntington YMCA family even before she was old enough to walk. She learned her ABCs at the Y Nursery School, swam her first strokes at the Y aquatics and enjoyed participating in the Ys soccer, dance, youth, teens and CIT camping programs. She is currently in her sixth year of Leaders Club, and has served as club secretary for three years. She is the editor of the clubs magazine, The Leader."

During 2003, Melinda participated in an extraordinary 20 community service projects and events," noted Ed Moffett. She has played an important role in the Leaders Club Unity in the Community Project." The project culminates in a day of service when YMCA teen leaders join with other teens from JCCs, churches, mosques and other community groups in a day of camaraderie, community service and learning to perform a variety of projects across Long Island. Melinda is currently serving on the multi-faith teen action committee that helps lead the event.

All of us at the Huntington YMCA," noted Mr. Moffett, are delighted to honor John and Melinda for their exceptional efforts on behalf of the YMCA and our community. We are pleased to see them recognized by our parent organization, the YMCA of Long Island, and we join with them to salute John Storck, Jr. as our 2004 Adult Volunteer of the Year and Melinda Harvey as our 2004 Youth Volunteer of the Year."
