(PRWEB) April 28, 2004 -- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation and the International Association for Human Values (IAHV), will be in New York City on May 3rd and May 4th. On May 3rd Sri Sri will be the 2004 International Lecturer at the American Psychiatric Associations 157th Annual Meeting at the Javits Center. On May 4th he will host a public talk at Town Hall.
For more than 20 years Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has traveled around the world, teaching, meeting with world leaders, and speaking at international forums such as the United Nations, the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders, and the World Economic Forum. A common thread throughout his work is the reminder that the great spiritual traditions have common goals and values. His simple message of love, practical wisdom, and compassion inspire people from all walks of life.
At the American Psychiatric Associations meeting Sri Sri will speak on the topic of Psychiatry and Spirituality: a Holistic Approach, discussing the introduction of unique applications of the mind/body/spirit concept. Sri Sri will illustrate how these concepts are used for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, violence, and stress-related disorders.
For Sri Sri the criteria for success are: You are free; you live in the present moment; you are useful to the people around you; and you feel love for all humanity." At the pubic talk at Town Hall on May 4th, discover Sri Sris inimitable warmth and wisdom.
Among Sri Sris many contributions to the world are the Art of Living Foundation and IAHV. Art of Living offers self development and health-related educational programs. IAHV promotes programs to encourage the practice of human values in everyday life. Both of these non-profit educational, charitable, and humanitarian organizations provide programs and services in more than 142 countries, and work in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, participating in a variety of committees and activities relating to health, education, sustainable development, and conflict resolution.
Art of Livings principal program is the Art of Living Course that teaches powerful stress management techniques that allow intuition and creativity to flourish. Art of Living courses have been made available throughout the world, with special trauma relief programs created in Macedonia, Kosova, Croatia, and Gujarat, and in New York after the 11 September attacks where more than 1,000 people participated. In late 2003 a team of Art of Living teachers spent four months in Iraq. Art of Living also has provided its training programs in prisons and to the government and corporate sectors, including The World Bank, Shell Oil, the US Department of Probation, and Credit Suisse.
Research has shown that the extraordinary breathing techniques taught in the Art of Living courses effectively relieve stress and increase energy, awareness, mental focus and sense of belonging. The effects have been demonstrated in a wide range of populations including health care practitioners, individuals with psychiatric and medical conditions, children and adolescents, prison inmates and staff, juvenile offenders, and victims of natural disasters, poverty, violence, war, and terrorism.
Dr. Richard Brown, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, relates that many of his patients who have taken the course say they have been transformed and that they never would have imagined that something so simple would have been so powerful and helpful.
The cornerstones of IAHVs programs are 5H (health, homes, hygiene, human values, and harmony in diversity) and YLTP (Youth Leadership Training Program). These programs have been implemented in India, South Africa, Botswana, Poland, the United States, Mexico, Panama, Belize and Indonesia, addressing the immediate needs of at-risk communities by rebuilding schools, providing proper health-care and educating youth on the necessity of hygiene and respect for their environment.
A new IAHV program, the Youth Empowerment Seminar, is being offered to schools in the United States. The Youth Empowerment Seminar develops bright, healthy, happy and motivated leaders with a strong sense of commitment towards self development, human values and community service.
