Nationally Recognized Decoy Carver to be Featured in Yearlong Museum Art Exhibit

The Upper-Bay Museum, North East, Maryland, has opened its yearlong exhibit on the artwork and life of Mr. Vincent Giannetto III, one of the most collectable decoy carvers in the country. Entitled Carving the Delaware River Tradition", the exhibit features Giannetto as one of the last true hunter-carvers" of the Delaware River. The exhibit features 75 pieces of his work spanning over four decades, and includes photographs and storyboards illustrating the story of his life, the Delaware region and associated traditions.

(PRWEB) May 3, 2004 --Giannetto was born in Southern New Jersey and learned the Delaware River traditions in the days before the local ecology and wildlife was severely altered by the dredging of the river. As a teen-ager he fell in love with the River and learned to carve decoys from local hunters because he couldnt afford to buy them. Five decades later he has become known as one of todays most collectable carvers, and is the last well-known carver that grew up during that time. Since the early 1970s he has been credited with defining the new Delaware River style, widely considered the most sought after and valuable decoys ever made.

As an enthusiast he spent most of his years along the river. This shaped his work into what has been described as being born from the love of the outdoors, from respect and affection for game, and from recognition that nature's beauty is something worthy of preservation." His unique style grew from the lack of formal training as an artist, and is founded upon his natural talent as both a wood carver and oil painter.

From the humble shores of the Delaware and the inspiration they instilled, he has won best-of-shows at nearly every major carving competition in the country, and earned himself an invitation to the White House by First Lady Laura Bush. His work has been collected by The Smithsonian Institute museum, Washington DC, featured in the Christmas display windows of Rockefeller Center, New York City, and traveled on to such foreign countries as Japan and England. The Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited, hunters, collectors, and authors alike have all sought his work. Although his work has been displayed individually in other museums, this exhibit is the first to feature such a large collection of his work.

The Upper Bay Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying historical works related to the rich history of the Upper Bay Watermen through the century old commercial fish house formerly owned by the H.L. Harvey Company. This not-for-profit organization seeks to promote activities to conserve and propagate Chesapeake Bay waters, marine life, waterfowl, and upland game. It is a region full of families that survived by their skills, handcrafted tools and unique equipment, and has captured the interest of many national figures throughout the years. Babe Ruth, Presidents Glover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, J.P. Morgan and Walter Chrysler all visited the area, and the museum features some artifacts from their involvement. It is open year-round, Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4:00 PM, and is a not-for-profit organization.
