Mike Powell, the world record-holder for the long jump tenders resignation as Coach at Cal State Fullerton. Powell to focus on long jump training for Olympic hopefuls.
(PRWEB) May 6, 2004 -- After careful consideration I have decided to resign my position as Coach at Cal State Fullerton," states Mike Powell, long jump world record holder.
Mike Powell beat Carl Lewis at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo with a jump of 29 feet 4 inches that broke Bob Beamon's 23-year-old world record.
I am leaving CSF to devote more time to the athletes enrolled in my Long Jump Academy. Several of the athletes are focused on the upcoming Olympic trials with the hope of competing in Athens," continues Powell.
CSF is a great facility for education and sport. The entire staff has been very supportive during my stay there, and I thank them."
Athletes currently enrolled in Mike Powells academy based in Southern California include Hussain Al Saba of Saudi Arabia currently ranked number three in the world. U.S. Olympic hopefuls include Bunmi Canales, Khara Covington, and Cody Jones.
Powell also coached India's Anju George to a Bronze Medal in the 2003 World Championships. This represented the first medal ever won by an Indian athlete in any track and field competition.
There is some tremendous new talent here, and I consider it my job to make sure that they are in their best physical and mental condition when they do compete," concludes Powell.
I will miss having Mikes friendship and just having daily contact with him," states John Elders the Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Cal State Fullerton.
Because of the positive example he sets, not only for sports but in life, Mike has been a great influence on our athletes."
Unlike many other world athletes, Mike is also a great teacher, and our kids have benefited from the knowledge he has imparted, concludes Elders.
