Taking "Control" of Stress

Are you stressed? Who isn't? Not only have we learned to live with stress, we've accepted it as a part of life. While it's true that we'll always have stress, you DO have the power to take control of it.

(PRWEB) May 6, 2004 -- Are you stressed? Who isnt? Stress isnt just for overachievers anymore - stress doesnt discriminate. Hearing the term stressed out" doesnt even phase people. Were all so used to having stress and being stressed and maybe even creating stress, that weve not only learned to live with it, weve accepted it as a part of life," says Kimberly Wells of MyPrivateCoach.com. Kimberly offers the following article for how to literally take control of your stress.

While there will always be stress of some sort in our lives, we shouldnt look at it as totally inevitable. Only when we choose to let it, does stress become an overwhelming problem. When are able to control the events that normally make us feel stressed, we can get through them without needing a bag of chocolate, a bottle of aspirin, and a box of tissues.

So what does control have to do with being stressed? Stress is the mental, emotional, and physiological reaction that a person experiences when they are faced with a situation that they cannot control, refuse to control, or do not know how to control. Only when we accept the things we cant control, and take responsibility for the things we can, will we be able to reduce the stress in our lives.

Our realm of control comes not in our outcome, but in our performance. We cant control the actions of another person, but we can influence their actions by providing them with the info they need to make the decision were hoping for. We cant control our weight, but we can control our eating and exercise habits. We cant control disasters, but we can control how we plan and prepare for them, and how we react to them. We cant control a moody co-worker, but we can control how we respond to them verbally and with our own mood and attitude.

When youre facing a stressful situation, take a few minutes to do a quick self-check. Determine what you are in control of, and write out specific steps you can take to make yourself more comfortable with the situation. Write down what youre not in control of and affirmations you can use to calm your mind.

Its said that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it. Stress is the same way. How you react to the things that bug you will determine how they affect your life.
