Poetry Landmark Nominations Invited by Academy of American Poets

The Academy of American Poets is inviting nominations from the public for poetry landmarks. Road Trip! Poetry Landmarks across the U.S.A." will be showcased on the Academys website, www.poets.org, during August 2004, as part of the Academys year-long National Poetry Almanac project.

(PRWEB) May 10, 2004 --The Academy of American Poets is inviting nominations from the public for poetry landmarks. Road Trip! Poetry Landmarks across the U.S.A." will be showcased on the Academys website, www.poets.org, during August 2004, as part of the Academys year-long National Poetry Almanac project.

We hope to have landmark nominations from all fifty states," says the Academys executive director Tree Swenson. We want to recognize points on our countrys physical landscape that are also important to the cultural landscape." Some of the landmarks already chosen for the National Poetry Almanac include the Berkeley Poetry Walk (Berkeley, CA), the American Poets Corner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (New York, NY), and Frost Place (Franconia, NH).

Landmarks submitted for consideration may be located anywhere in the United States and should be physical sites that are important to the history of American poetry. Ideally, all landmarks will be open to the public with free or low-cost admission. Nominations should include the landmark name, city, state, and a brief description. Nominations will be accepted only by email and should be sent to npm@poets.org. The deadline for submissions is midnight on June 30, 2004.

The Academy began rolling outhe National Poetry Almanac on April 1, 2004, to coincide with the first day of National Poetry Month, a program started by the Academy in 1996. The Almanac will ultimately provide 365 days worth of poetry highlights, activities, ideas, and history for individual exploration and classroom use. The Almanac complements the National Poetry Map, another online project created by the Academy in 2003. Both the Almanac and Map are available exclusively at the Academys award-winning website, www.poets.org.
