– After joining the board of MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) in October of 2003, PDC (Power Digital Card) joins the board of SD Association (SDA) after voting are been completed in April of 2004. Existing members and new board members are as follows: C-Guys, Canon, Eastman Kodak, Hewlett Packard (HP), ITRI, Infineon Technologies, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Motorola, NEC, Sandisk, Samsung, Sharp, Socket Communications, Thomson, Toshiba; and counting in PDC, there are in total 16 board members. The board members are nominated and voted by the executive members of the SDA and have a term of two years. Main responsibilities of the SDA board include action items for the Association, future strategy planning, and maintaining operations of the Association.

Although different specifications of memory cards exist on the market today, it is noted that the MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital Card have become de-facto standards, and future generation memory cards will be based on the basic concepts of MMC and SD. Thus, a lot of companies are taking different roles in the MMCA and SDA; and currently, there are only four companies that take board positions in both associations, Samung, Infineon, HP, and PDC. Being a board member not only means executing action items of the Association, but also contributing resources to the Association as well as the specification, and often times, means servicing other member companies including those who are competitors.

According to Gen Shueh of PDC, “We give special thanks to all those companies who voted in our favor. We hope that with our new position in the SDA, we are able to service other member companies more, just as we did with our position in the Compliance Committee of the SDA, servicing member companies by identifying and resolving non-compliant issues. Total number of Taiwan companies in the SDA exceed 30%, and number of Taiwan companies in the MMCA exceed 40%. In the past year, PDC has offered a lot of our resources to servicing local member companies that don’t take an active role in the Association, and we foresee that we will continue this service for the good of the Associations and the Industry as a whole.”
