More than 8,500 people in northern Colorado have been diagnosed with Alzheimers, and more than 61,200 people in Colorado and over 4 million in the United States suffer from the disease. Memories in the Making is a year-round program that celebrates the lives of those who suffer with Alzheimers while enabling them to participate in painting, and raises funds for the Association by auctioning off selected artwork.
Funds are also raised through ticket sales and event sponsorships. The Association has many partners that provide framing, food, limousines, publicity and graphic design as gifts in kind. All money raised at the auction remains in northern Colorado. The money is used for client programs and to provide services for families. The 2004 Northern Colorado Memories in the Making fundraising goal for the Association is $60,000.
This year, 171 artists from 12 sites submitted 875 individual pieces of art. Sites include assisted living, nursing home, special care unit and adult day care facilities. A professional jury selected 50 original paintings created by individuals diagnosed with Alzheimers to be auctioned off. This years signature art was created by Les Kool and is entitled Angel Holding the Earth."
Tickets to the auction are $75. Cocktails and hors doeuvres will be served from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. A silent auction will take place from 6:30 until 8:45, and a live auction will be held from 7:30 until 8:30. This is the fourth year that Dan Ostermiller has hosted the event at his studio.
On May 6th, the Fort Collins Country Club hosted an Artists Tea and reception where all the selected artwork was displayed. The event provided families, friends and caregivers time to reflect and celebrate the artists lives and creativity.
