Dynamic Ratings Announces Its Selection by Kansas City Utility
for Advanced Transformer Monitoring and Control
Dynamic Ratings announced today that its DRMCC transformer controller integrated with Luxtrons m600 Fluoroptic® thermometry module has been chosen by Kansas City Board of Public Utilities for accurate and reliable transformer load monitoring and control.
(PRWEB) May 14, 2004 -- The Dynamic Ratings control product line provides users the ability to load transformers 10 to 20% higher and with greater confidence compared to static thermal rating. This additional overload capability enables the utility to defer capital purchases, resulting in significant, measurable cost savings. In addition, the control system provides online aging calculations used to calculate the optimum time to replace or upgrade the substation.
Dynamic Ratings and Luxtron collaborated to combine dynamic transformer control with fiber optic winding temperature measurement. Prior to this, the addition of a direct winding temperature measurement required a separate control system to receive and communicate the winding "hotspot" measurements. This collaborative effort integrates Luxtron's m600 OEM Fluroroptic® thermometry module into the DRMCC controller, enabling direct and dynamic load control. This integration results in a cost-effective solution for control of medium and large power transformers.
Luxtron's m600 OEM thermometry module extends the benefits of best practice hot spot monitoring previously affordable only on large transformers. Based on patented Fluoroptic® technology, which is inherently safe, reliable and stable, the m600 uses the same ruggedized fiber optic probes as Luxtron's high end 4th generation WTS-22 controller. Introduced 5 years ago, these probes now represent the standard in fiber optic probe construction for use in transformers.
About Kansas City Board of Public Utilities
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, or BPU, provides electric transmission and distribution services to approximately 66,000 customers, and water distribution services to 52,000 customers in the Kansas City, Kansas area. BPU also operates coal, gas, and oil-fired power generation facilities. Owned by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, the utility began distributing water in 1909 and began providing electricity services in 1912. The DRMCC transformer controller will be installed in the utilitys newest substation in western Wyandotte County, the fastest growing area of their service area.
