MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (PRWEB) May 18, 2004 ---Investors of Tomorrow -- Secondary school students across the Greater Toronto Area have put their knowledge of the stock market to the test. After competing in the bi-annual InvestYoung Online Stock Market Competition, two students from Loyola Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario have earned first place in this competition which was launched in fall 2003 by Investors of Tomorrow.
The InvestYoung Online Stock Market Competition lies on the cutting edge of technology and education, giving students hands-on experience to acquire financial literacy. Students are given the opportunity to invest $100,000 Canadian dollars in stocks on major North American exchanges over two three-month sessions in order to gain experience and knowledge about the stock market, economics, and financial literacy. Ticker Technologies Inc. of Glen Head, New York is the primary technology sponsor of the competition.
Over 200 students across the Greater Toronto Area participated in the inaugural session of the InvestYoung competition, which began on October 6, 2003 and concluded on January 16, 2004. The number of participants grew to include nearly 400 students in the second session which ran from February 16, 2004 to May 14, 2004. Among the secondary schools that had participating students were Gordon Graydon Memorial, Loyola, Streetsville, Turner Fenton, Woodlands, Erindale, John Fraser, Rick Hansen, and the Ontario Science Centre School.
The winner of the competitions first session, Timothy Chung, ended with a portfolio value of $157,363, an over 57 percent gain in only twelve weeks. Chung managed to capitalize in a bull market through carefully selected long positions in the technology and financial sectors. Chung is a grade twelve student at Loyola Catholic Secondary School and also serves as the Branch Manager of Investors of Tomorrow at his school.
Another grade twelve Loyola student and Investors of Tomorrow member, Neil Ip Fook Shing, also finished first in the second session, with a portfolio value of $165,179, the largest return in the competitions history. As the markets began to retreat from highs reached early this year, Shing implemented a strategy of numerous short positions to profit from the pullback in stock prices.
We focus on extending financial literacy to youth because we believe it is an important life skill that is often neglected," says Andrew Tai, chief executive of Investors of Tomorrow. The achievements of these students are a testament to what youth can accomplish if given the opportunity."
