Fashion Group International selects Sophia Forero Jewels as its 2004 recipient of the Style Makers & Rule Breakers award. This award, presented at the Arts Club of Chicago on May 20th, honors Sophia Forero as a trendsetter in the Accessories category.

Fashion Group International, a global non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the advancement of fashion and design professionals, identifies Sophia Forero as an “innovator, a creator, a visionary and a formidable talent in the fashion and design industries.”

Sophia Forero creates fine jewelry using semi-precious stones and silver accents. She designs and produces accessories that are symbols of values, beliefs, and achievement. “I approach each piece as a window to a woman’s spirit,” Sophia explains. “Sparkle uncovers elegance, elegance unveils inner beauty, and inner beauty reflects personal peace.”

In 2002, Sophia won the Marshall Fields Distinction in Design award, placing first over hundreds of designers. Her jewelry is worn by actresses Holly Hunter, Juliette Lewis, Mariel Hemingway, Kathryn Morris, Nia Vardalos and Keiko Agena. Sophia’s pieces will appear in Steve Martin’s upcoming film, Shop Girl.

Sophia is inspired by jewelry history and her love of international culture. Conversant in seven languages, Sophia consults with artisans from countries including Russia, Greece, Mexico, and India, and travels throughout southern Europe and Central America. “I take elements of Byzantine art and Tuareg culture, tweak them and make them my own,” says Sophia. The result is jewels that she describes as “Edgy yet charming, the signature of my line.”

Sophia’s work has appeared in Women’s Wear Daily, Lucky Magazine, Woman’s Day, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun-Times, and Chicago Social, and on Chicago’s WLS radio’s morning broadcast, ABC television’s 190 North, and on CNN.

Sophia, her husband – the artist Mauricio Forero, and their three children live in suburban Chicago Illinois.
