New Residential Yeshiva Addresses Crisis for Many Jewish Families of High School Students
The importance of religion for Jewish teens is a significant factor for teens today facing a lot of life stressors, yet it is these high risk students that are the most difficult to place in yeshivot today. Yeshiva Tichon, a new residential school in Miami Beach, Florida utilizes innovative teaching methodologies to accept all Jewish children, regardless of background or educational difficulties.
Miami Beach (PRWEB) May 18, 2004 -- According to a recent American Psychological Association study, when adolescents perceive religion as important in their lives, it lowers their rates of smoking, drinking and drug use. Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine found the importance of religion was particularly significant for teens who were facing a lot of life stressors. Yet, it is the high risk students that are the most difficult to place in yeshivos today.
After several frantic calls from both parents and schools, Rabbi Mordechai Yitzchok Friedman, a 30-year veteran in Jewish Education decided to come up with an answer. We cannot just discard these precious Jewish souls because they dont fit into a conventional program." This fall Rabbi Friedman, the "Rosh Yeshiva," will open the Yeshiva Tichon High School of Greater South Florida, as an response, with a commitment to giving all Jewish children a Jewish education, regardless of background.
The Yeshivas methodology is innovative. According to Rabbi Friedman, All Hebrew texts are in translation side by side in English. With an easier to understand presentation, students face less frustration, and studies become a less intimidating and thus an even more enjoyable experience." Small classes enable individualized attention and positive motivation and the structured curriculum aids the students organizational skills.
While the program is located in Miami Beach, Florida, students are being accepted from throughout the United States and Canada, as well as overseas from England and Australia. We picked Miami Beach as a location for our programs, because of the expanding Jewish community, support services available, year-round favorable climate, and the need in the community." There are separate dormitories for both male and female students.
Specially designed as an outreach institution and as an independent facility is not bound by any ideology other than Torah and Jewish Law. The goals of Yeshiva Tichon are to transmit "emunah" [faith, "dayeh" [knowledge, and "shimush" [practice to the students in a pleasant environment," according to Rabbi Friedman. Jewish as well as secular studies are addressed to the highest standards; the Yeshiva exceeds all Florida Educational Requirements as both a College Preparatory Program and a Career Preparatory Graduation Program.
The Yeshiva is presently seeking donors to give needy students scholarships, and donations toward the Yeshiva's building fund. We are especially getting calls from other yeshivos that find a student cannot exist successfully in their program. We understand the methodology need to teach these kids," says Rabbi Friedman. Every Jewish student has a place at Tichon High!"
