Red Hooks Art Corridor

A Neighborhood Brimming with Culture

(PRWEB) May 21, 2004 -- There are few places in New York like The Point" section of the Red Hook, Brooklyn. Known by artists and locals as a unique afternoon destination for years, the area is bubbling with springtime happenings (the Pier Art Show 12), events (a series of art talks and dance performances), activities (new restaurants, bars, and art galleries). And for those who enjoy a quieter day, there is plenty of relaxing fare; feeding the ducks, watching the big and small boats enter and exit the harbor from the Valentino Pier Park, taking a stroll along the Beard Street Pier walkway for the vistas of New York Bay and Lady Liberty. The Point is a marvel of both historical and cultural value. Much of the Civil War era architecture remains intact while all that is enjoyable about a weekend can be found within its five cobblestone street radius (yes, cobblestone streets!)

Once the teeming waterfront, it is now the site for the spectacular Pier Art Shows put on by the non-profit Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) as well as the home for many working artists, with new galleries and great hang-outs peppered throughout the neighborhood. Enjoy an exquisite dinner at 360 the French bistro, gobble up a burger, fries and a milkshake at Hope and Anchor, enjoy Brooklyns best brick oven pizza at the Liberty Heights Tap Room, take in some salty local talk at historic Sunnys Bar, or venture to Lillies, a restored 19th century longshoremans bar that features an outdoor garden. Or do what longtime Red Hook fan, artist Ellie Winberg does, I get a great sandwich at Gonias and take it to Valentino Pier for a springtime lunch, nowhere in New York is the waterfront this dramatic and accessible."

If youre looking for hassle-free and fun things to do on a New York weekend, this is the place to visit. Youll be surprised by how this small coastal urban village is available to all. Leave the hassles in mid-town, lets look at art, have a gourmet lunch and then lets go fishing off the pier. Take your car (parking is easy); the F train and B61 or B77 buses.
