Houston Woman Magazine captures the story behind www.pursestories.com, the website that collects and celebrates the memories and emotions that purses evoke. Visual artist Mary Margaret Hansen launched the site a year ago after responses she received for an installation of vintage handbags, text and photo collages created for FotoFest 2000, The International Month of Photography in Houston.

On www.pursestories.com viewers can add their own handbag stories and photos or meander through the story collection that includes titles like My Mother Was A Belle, Aunt Anna‚s Iguana Bag, Besotted, Alligator Skin is Tough and Lost Marriage. Viewers may also leave their email address on the site to receive monthly newsletters with links to the newest stories.

"The website is a giant collaboration",says Hansen. "Whether our purse is slung over our shoulder or cradled under an elbow, it is very personal space, holding what we need to face the world. There is always a story we can tell about the purse we carry.
