Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (PRWEB) May 26, 2004 -- Standing in the bakery department of a large retail food chain, I noticed an employee unloading a five-tier rack of cookies. I asked about a particular type of cookie and my request launched a most surprising and energetic conversation.
This woman had a sense of what she needed to make her work, work for her. She took pride in what she did, recognized the value of community and had an innate sense of what it takes to makes things work for herself. My guess is she lived a pretty balanced existence, but its really only a guess...you see she had to go, her next batch of cookies were calling.
Her Story
With great pride she told me that she had just made all the cookies and that they had turned out exceptionally well. I commented on her pride in her accomplishment and she replied, 'but that is what I am here to do. Now I was intrigued. When I asked if she liked working for this company she enthused that she joined the firm nine years ago as a bagger and luckily she was moved to the bakery early on and had been there ever since. 'They have a wonderful health plan and although I dont really need it right now, except for when I go to the dentist twice a year... I know I will be well taken care of in the future.
This woman was so proud of her work and her employer -- I needed to know why. 'Is it your attitude that makes this such a great work experience or is this work so well suited to your skills and abilities, that it is just a perfect fit.? 'Well I dont think its my attitude. I just know that all of us work back there and try and create the best product we can...were like a family. And I guess now that you say it, I do have a good attitude. Then she said 'can you tell me why you would take the time to talk to me like this? Youre an author? Youve written a book about meaningful work? Whats your name? I want to buy your book.
