Novel Submitted for Pulitzer set on South Dakota Prairie - First American Novel dealing with Jante's Law - a phenomenon of Scandinavian Culture
Amy Hillgren Peterson is the author of "The Swedish Lie" a novel set on the South Dakota prairie which has been submitted for the next Pulitzer Prize in Fiction
SIOUX CITY, IA (PRWEB) May 29, 2004 --Local author Amy Hillgren Peterson has published her first novel. The enterprising work is the first American novel to deal with the complex, unwritten code of ethics in Scandinavian culture known as Jante's Law.
The book spans a century and four generations of a Swedish-American family from its foundation on the South Dakota prairie during the land claim era through the Depression, the clash between rebellion and cultural identity of the 1950s and the post modern struggles of Henny, the main character and fourth generation protagonist.
With interwoven themes of highway muscle car drag racing, watercolor painting, distance cycling, an Internet web cast, and call girl prostitution, the fast-paced novel narrates the search for truth under the oppression of Jante's Law, which essentially dictates to an entire culture "you're not good enough."
Amy Hillgren Peterson, 32, resides in Sioux City, Iowa with her husband and children. She is a freelance writer and serves several nonprofit agencies.
