Thanks to the teamwork of Texans CAN! and Geeks On Call®, older PCs now get a second lease on life -- and will help to increase the technological skills of countless Dallas children.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 30, 2004 --- Each year, millions of Americans purchase new computers, which usually results in their old computers being shoved into a corner of a dank basement or simply tossed into a landfill. But what if that old hunk of junk could be turned into someone elses treasure? That is precisely the approach taken by a Dallas-based educational organization known as Texans CAN!." Striving to provide enhanced educational opportunities to disadvantaged and at-risk students in the Dallas area, Texans CAN! has created a program that allows people to donate their used computers. Coordinating this donation program is the most well-known group of computer geeks in Dallas: Geeks On Call®, the nations premier provider of on-site computer services. Thanks to the teamwork of Texans CAN! and Geeks On Call®, older PCs now get a second lease on life -- and will help to increase the technological skills of countless Dallas children.

The mission of Texans CAN! is to provide a second chance for at-risk youth and their families, and to help them achieve economic independence and the hope for a better life through relationship-based education and training. The Texans CAN! model is a non-traditional, student-centered program designed for individual attention. It focuses on personalized learning plans and small classes with intense counseling, all of which is designed to help students succeed. The core values of this organization are all children are of immeasurable value and incalculable worth; all children can learn; and children learn best in a compassionate, positive, and nurturing environment that builds self-esteem and teaches respect for others.

The first school underneath the Texans CAN! banner was the Dallas CAN! Academy, founded in 1985. Initially this school provided juvenile offenders with a remedial education program in a residential setting. The results of this effort were so positive that Dallas CAN! Academy quickly expanded to offer programs to high school dropouts and non-adjudicated youth. In 1987, substance abuse and life-skill components were added, and the curriculum was modified to include computer-assisted learning.

In 1996, Dallas CAN! Academy was named one of the first twenty Texas charter schools, which permitted it to award high school diplomas and General Educational Development (GED) certificates. Currently, Texans CAN! is a network of nine campuses located throughout Texas, including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Each academy location is fully recognized as a public school by the Texas State Board of Education.

Geeks On Call® is the high-tech equivalent of a doctor who makes house calls. Too often, small businesses and residential customers lose substantial time and money while waiting for their computer problems to be fixed by a large, impersonal retail store -- which often keeps the computer for a week or more and charges an arm and a leg! Refusing to tolerate this type of slow, unsatisfactory service, Geeks On Call® goes against the grain and brings help directly to the customers doorstep. Everything the Geeks technicians need to complete their tasks is nestled inside their sleek patriot-blue Chrysler PT Cruisers -- affectionately known as Geek Cruisers" -- which are emblazoned with the Geeks On Call® logo and toll-free phone number.

Launched in 1999, Geeks On Call® began its operations in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, VA -- where it experienced immediate success. Overwhelmed by the publics hunger for dependable computer support, Geeks On Call® realized the only way to satisfy its ballooning customer base would be to franchise the company. In 2001 the first Geeks offspring was born, and since then nearly 170 franchises have been planted throughout the United States.

Not only have the expedient, reliable services provided by Geeks On Call® found success with residential clients, but also with small businesses that simply cannot afford the enormous expense of hiring an IT staff. Instead of paying exorbitant salaries to keep a full-fledged IT staff on hand, small businesses simply can turn to Geeks On Call® on those occasions in which computer services are required. Now everyone can have access to superior computer repairs, upgrades, troubleshooting, personalized training, networking and custom-built PCs -- without emptying their wallets.

Currently, Geeks On Call® offers service in the following states: Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
