DreamCon, Jacksonvilles Only Genre Convention, to Raise $20,000 for American Diabetes Association

Jacksonville's DreamCon event organizers have named the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as the official charity of choice for its 2004 inaugural event. In fact, the stated goal of the event is to raise $20,000 for this worthwhile cause.

JACKSONVILLE, FL (PRWEB) May 31, 2004 --In the interest of community health, awareness and contribution, the DreamCon event organizers have named the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as the official charity of choice for its 2004 inaugural event. In fact, the stated goal of the event is to raise $20,000 for this worthwhile cause.

In turn, as a way to raise awareness about DreamCons commitment, the DreamCon staff will participate in this weekends Diabetes Exposed event on the University of North Florida campus.

The event - open this Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. at the UNF Conference Center - is a one-day conference and tradeshow that offers screenings, seminars and exhibits designed to give people with diabetes and their caregivers up-to-date information about diabetes diagnosis, prevention, intervention and treatment.

Well be staffing the booth on Saturday, and well probably raise some funds," says DreamCons Chief Organizer, Ron Methvin. But the bulk of the money will be raised during DreamCon through events such as an on-site charity auction that many stars have donated items for. There will also be concerts and other exciting fundraising activities; plus a portion of all three-day ticket sales is already earmarked to go to directly to the American Diabetes Association, so every time someone buys a three-day pass were that much closer to our goal."

When asked how DreamCon settled on the American Diabetes Association as its first beneficiary, Methvin is quick to answer.

These kinds of conventions, or 'cons, have a long history of raising money for charity," he explains. A number of legendary genre actors and writers, such as Anne Rice, George Lucas, Halle Berry and Piers Anthony - and even some of our staff - have been personally affected by diabetes, and thats how we decided on the ADA."

Persons and companies who would like to donate items for the DreamCon Charity Auction for ADA are asked to contact Ron Methvin via ron@dreamcon.net, or by calling (904) 910-0518.
