Libertarian Group Endorses Same Sex Marriage as Stepping Stone
The Outright Libertarians pass a resolution supporting same sex marriage as a stepping stone towards privatizing civil marriage. At the same meeting, national officers were elected.
ATLANTA, GA (PRWEB) May 30, 2004 --Chairman Pro-Tem, Mr. Allan Wallace, announced passage of a resolution at the annual business meeting of the Outright Libertarians held Friday regarding the leading domestic issue of this political season; Gay Marriage". The members do hereby state that we support wholly the right of same gendered couples to marry, as an interim action until the government removes itself from sanctioning marriages altogether."
The officers and membership are proud to state that the resolution passed unanimously, not a single member present abstaining or dissenting.
Also at the meeting at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta, held concurrently with the Libertarian Party National Presidential Nominating Convention, the Outright Libertarians elected its national officers. The new executive committee is composed of Libertarian leaders from coast to coast. Elected were: Rob Power (Chairman), Raphael Möller (Vice-Chairman), Doyle Jones (Secretary), and Lloyd (Russ) Russell (Treasurer). In addition, the three at-large positions on the executive board were filled by Todd Andrew Barnett, Thomas D. Freese, and Tom Stevens.
There is broad agreement amongst Libertarians that the government should neither regulate nor promote either civil or religious marriage in any way: Libertarians agree government shouldnt be prohibiting same sex marriages, nor promoting a social agenda through the tax code. As yet, however, there is no plank in the National Libertarian Party platform specifically approving government sanctioned same sex marriage as a stepping stone towards the goal of privatized marriage.
Said Rob Power, the newly elected chairman, One of the objects of the Outright Libertarians is to encourage the national Libertarian Party to make a statement supporting same sex marriage, as several Libertarian state party affiliates have done already. Our resolution is the first step in that process."
