The Industrial Research Institute (IRI) announces today that it awarded the 2004 Industrial Research Institute Medal to Dr. John (Jack) W. Miley, Division Director, Research, Development and Technology, Milliken Chemical Division, Milliken and Company. The award was presented at a ceremony in conjunction with the IRI 2004 Annual Meeting on May 18. Dr. Miley is the first recipient of this award from Milliken and Company where, during his more than thirty year tenure, he transformed a struggling chemical business into a rapidly growing division.

Established in 1946, the IRI Medal is presented by the IRI to recognize leaders of technology for their outstanding accomplishments in technological innovation that contribute broadly to the development of industry and to the benefit of society. Dr. Miley has been awarded the IRI Medal for his vital role in matching technical objectives and market timing that resulted in business success and realized double-digit compounded growth rates for more than 20 years. He is the 59th recipient of the IRI Medal.

Dr. Miley’s contributions throughout his 32-year career at Milliken have resulted in new businesses, maximization of returns on investments in intellectual property and nationally recognized safety processes. He began his career in 1972 as a chemist, and was soon promoted to Manager of the Corporate Analytical Laboratory, where he increased staff and modernized instruments for chemistry. Dr. Miley was recruited by the chemical business, a unit whose vision was to become a financially significant part of the company. He accomplished this vision by following three basic principles: select, hire and retain the best and brightest employees; work only on proprietary products; and, develop products with a high technology content that bring recognizable value to customers. Three products that emerged through Dr. Miley’s application of these criteria were Capture®, Reactint®, and Millad®. The success of these products led to new product platforms for Milliken’s chemical division. By developing a culture of innovation and increasing his scientists’ knowledge of patent law, the level of patent filings was dramatically increased, and a review process that refined and strengthened patent applications was implemented. His emphasis on safety improvement helped Milliken’s corporate headquarters achieve the designation of a VPP Star Site by the U.S. Occupation, Health, and Safety Administration (OSHA) in 2000.

Dr. Miley has several patents to his name and hundreds of patents attributed to his teams. He has serves on the external advisory board to the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University and was a Captain in the United States Army. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry at Clemson University and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Florida State University.
