Edward Lehman of Lehman, Lee and Xu interviewed in Beijing Weekend

Edward E Lehman, prominent China lawyer and Managing Partner of Lehman, Lee and Xu was interviewed in Beijing Weekend on what it is like to live and practice in China.

(PRWEB) June 11, 2004 -- Having worked and managed Chinese law firms since his arrival in China in 1987 gives Edward Lehman the unique distinction of being the longest practicing foreign lawyer working with local firms in the country.

He was interviewed in the June 4 - 6 edition of Beijing Weekend on what life has been like for a veteran expat lawyer in China. Back in 1987, "there was very little business. It was more lucrative to be a taxi driver or a waiter in a foreign hotel than to do what I was doing" states Lehman.

Times, however, have changed. In post-WTO China, the professional services industry is booming. With regard to Intellectual Property law, Lehman claims that "there's more patents and trademarks work here than anywhere on the planet."

That leads to another interesting and oft discussed point: the efficacy of the legal system in China. In what is perhaps a refreshing change Lehman says "I'm delighted to say that we are getting to a transparent system. It infuriates me to hear people say that you need 'guanxi' (Chinese for special relationships) to function here. Having a transparent legal system is a way to have a better society for everyone. I never thought it would change so fast."
