Samantha Wall, Staged Presence
Juliette Ricci, New mixed media works
This highly-anticipated duo show challenges the concept of vulnerability through daring means of self-exposure. Samantha Wall returns with a new set of photorealist drawings of female nudes, gargantuan in proportion and immaculately rendered in textural shades of conte crayon. Whereas Walls nudes exhibited in March struck soft, prudent poses, the latest works- collectively entitled Staged Presence- are angular and assertive, jaunty and commanding. Supreme anatomical proficiency, manifested in rippling musculature and striking bodily form, resurrects da Vinci and Michelangelo, yet the gestures and sense of self-ownership suggest a post-feminist reclamation of the Nude, honest sexuality, and gripping control.
Juliette Riccis vivid mixed media works are equally unabashed and self-exposed. Scrawled text, looming color, and minimal collage provide a quenching compliment to Walls drawings. Autobiographical passages extracted from personal diaries compromise the artist by publicizing the traditionally forbidden. Ricci invites dialogs between Self and Stranger, whether the viewer or the person referenced within each piece. Ricci is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her work was recently featured in the Cascade AIDS Project auction catalog.
