Turner South® Taps Wordz & Rhythmz To Coordinate "My South Speaks" Spoken Word Competition in Birmingham July 13th -- 17th

Turner Broadcast System, Inc.s regional entertainment network, Turner South®, has turned to Birmingham for its "My South Speaks" spoken word competition, and has enlisted Wordz & Rhythmz (W&R) as one of its Event Consultants for the Birmingham tour, which kicks off on July 13th.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (PRWEB) June 13, 2004 -- Words, words, words. They remain the primary source of sustenance for starving poets, but a poet cannot live by words alone.

Thankfully, Turner Broadcast System, Inc.s regional entertainment network, Turner South®, has turned to Birmingham for its "My South Speaks" spoken word competition, which is seeking the best spoken word artists to market its "My South" image campaign. The competition is offering the King, or Queen, of Speaks a Grand Prize of $500, $100 for all Semi-Finalists, and select participants an opportunity to have their work aired! Note to spoken word artists: heres your opportunity to win some cash and TV-time as side items to your verbal entree!

The network has enlisted Wordz & Rhythmz (W&R) as one of its Event Consultants for the Birmingham tour, which kicks off on July 13th with Semi-Final #1 taking place at the Carver Theatre at 7:30pm. The event will be hosted by the theatres On Stage At the Carver Director, Derrico Dabney, along with Slam Poet Lindsay Stone. Semi-Final #2 ensues on July 14th at 7:30pm at SOBO with host Kirk Hardesty, and Semi-Final #3 hooks it in at the High Note Lounge on July 15th at 7:30pm, which will be hosted by W&R Founder, LaShanna R. Price. To round it up, the Final Competition will take place at WorkPlay on July 17th at 8:00pm with special guest judges from 98.7 KISS FM and The Birmingham News.

"Its truly a blessing to have an opportunity to work with Turner South representatives to coordinate 'My South Speaks,'" said Price, who will also be appearing on the New Arts Stage during City Stages on June 20th. "This adds another star to our citys entertainment flag. I kept telling my parents that when my teachers wrote 'Talkative' on my report cards, they were really trying to say that I was enhancing my communication skills!"

W&R is well-known for organizing and producing classy and positive spoken word poetics, as well as leading in the area of local entertainment public relations and event promotions since its founding in July 2002. Additional accomplishments include producing its "Speakable Souls" special events, managing PR for Just A Few Cats, casting Ruben Studdards "Flying Without Wings" Video and producing the "Safari Speaks" events.

Limited slots are available for poets who wish to compete in the "My South Speaks" competition. Heres how to "Speak Out for Your South:"

1)     Sign up at either the Carver Theatre, SOBO or the High Note Lounge (you can only compete once).
2)     Pen your piece beginning with the phrase: "My South..." or "In My South..." and end it with the sentence: "My name is __________ and this is My South."
3)     Performances should be kept to 3 minutes or less. (Having your piece memorized and "keeping it clean for TV" will increase the likelihood of your performance being used on-air.)
