Gundopant Bhanu alias Nanasaheb (Shreeram Lagoo) is a highly respected social worker. Having dedicated his entire life to the upliftment and education of widows in a society that has shunned them, his family comes secondary to his mission. Faced with the superhuman task of raising the family with only a meager contribution from her husband, the impetuous, acid-tongued Savitiri alias Bayo (Rohini Hattangady) often gives vent to her feelings by giving a tongue-lashing to her husband. But under the vitriolic exterior lies a heart of pure gold.
Other members of the immediate family include her younger brother Tatoba, her son Purushottam and her daughter Krishna. Her stepson Jagannath, stung by his fathers indifference to his family, has already migrated to Africa. Nanasahebs co-workers in his cause include the elderly Abasaheb and the younger Keshavrao, who is almost an adopted son and in whom Nanasaheb sees his true spiritual heir.
With powerful dialogues, Vasant Kanetkar weaves a mesmerizing story around the inter-relationship of these intensely human characters.
