The Ultimate Head Start: "Mind Masseuse" Teaches Teens to Tap Into The Power of Their Minds
Bye-Bye to Woo-Woo: One Oregon woman is using science--not sorcery--to get kids inspired and motivated
(PRWEB) June 13, 2004 -- Not content to limit her private practice to West Hills matrons and downtown Portland executives, Maya Talisman Frost is zeroing in on the age during which mindfulness can matter most--the high school years.
She's no PhD-toting, never-had-kids kind of expert. Frost has four teenage daughters, a psychology degree, training in mediation and conflict resolution, and a passion for brain research. She's a former certifed personal fitness trainer who believes it is even more important to exercise our minds than it is to exercise our bodies.
Frost's surprising but simple techniques turn typical responses to frustration upside down. After working successfully with mothers, she realized that the ones who could really benefit from her method are kids.
Despite her 25 years of meditation, Frost does not teach meditation techniques. "I start with the fact that the vast majority of people will never develop a meditation practice. That certainly doesn't mean they can't become mindful." She teaches the "two-minute sit" and the "ten-second rule"--her signature methods for gaining clarity, comfort and comic relief throughout the day.
Frost understands kids, and is convinced that mindfulness is an easy sell. "Tell a teenager that meditation would be good for them, and watch their eyes roll. Tell them they can learn the secret to getting their mind to work for them instead of against them, and they're ready to jump on it."
Her "Maximizing U" course features a month-long series of private sessions to give kids what she calls "the ultimate head start".
