Venture capital activity surges 59% on the heels of several significant financings. $414 million was raised primarily by California based software companies. Venture Capital Investments by Region

Geographically, 12 California companies raised $214.6 million in venture financings. The largest venture financing in California this period went into Force10 Networks, Inc. ( for $74.9 million. Force10 Networks is a Milpitas based company that is the pioneer in resilient Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching and routing.

Venture Capital Investments by Sector

The software sector raised 37% of the venture capital this period. Sixteen software companies raised over $153 million in venture financing. The largest venture financing was by Pixel Magic Imaging, Inc. (, a company that provides digital imaging solutions for retailers.

Companies raising their Series C rounds led this week's venture capital activity. Series C companies represented 34% of the total venture capital deployed this period.
