High Satisfaction Marks Suggest Anesthesia Administered During Office-Based Procedures Provides a More Tranquil and Enjoyable Experience for Patients

Office based medical procedures growing in popularity among patients. Anesthesiologists bring the safety of a hospital to the comfort of a local doctor's office. 99% of Patients Surveyed Were Satisfied With Office-Based Anesthesia Service

New Rochelle, NY (PRWEB) June 16, 2004 -- A recent survey completed by Somnia, shows an all-time high in patient satisfaction of office-based and ambulatory anesthesia services. In fact, 99% of patients who responded indicated their anesthesia expectations were fully met. In comparing these results to similar hospital or surgery center-based surveys, the office-based anesthesia satisfaction rates were the same, and in some cases better. Surgical and anesthesia care in the office-based setting is often associated with a more convenient, familiar and emotionally comfortable experience, albeit with fewer medical resources. These data suggest that patient satisfaction need not suffer in these less traditional surgical environments.

These results are exciting, not only because they show that our anesthesiologists are meeting the needs of our patients, but that patients in general have warmed up to office-based surgery and anesthesia. With patient satisfaction so high, perhaps more patients will undergo important cancer screening exams such as colonoscopy and lives will be saved," said Marc E. Koch, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer of Somnia, Inc. Koch also noted that while anesthesia administered in an ambulatory setting is a benefit to the patient, it is important to remember that anesthesiology is a complex science requiring the skills of highly trained and vigilant professionals. Patients should accept nothing less than the gold standard, a Physician Anesthesiologist. That is, a doctor who has finished medical school and several years of additional anesthesia training."

A total of 1,076 patients completed the survey, representing 39.4 percent of the mailed questionnaires. 93% of respondents were gastroenterology and colorectal surgery patients.
