Wireless Convergence by 2010
Panel of 5 industry leading companies agree that wireless convergence will be deployed by 2010.
Cupertino CA (PRWEB) June 23, 2004 -- More than two hundred people crowded in to hear industry leaders discuss the technology issues surrounding End to End Wireless: From the Handset to the Backbone," that inhibit the deployment of converged wireless voice, data and advanced services.
We agree that technology is no longer the differentiator," said Mort Cohen, the moderator and a principal of the RevGen Group, but interoperability and business models will determine success." The next End to End Wireless seminar, in July, will focus on these critical business issues.
Mohammad Shakouri, VP Business Development of Alvarion, presented in-depth information about the WiMax Forum and its members. Randall Schwartz of Intel Wireless Networks mentioned the imminent announcement of Intels 802.16d engine. Nokias Strategic Planning Manager, Haig Colter, introduced the term integrated mobile terminal" instead of 'handset to emphasize its converged capabilities. Qualcomms Senior Director of Strategic Marketing, Clint McClellan, presented data showing that international markets are moving faster than the US in adopting 3G networks and referred to www.3GToday.com for more information. Rajeev Chand, Senior Equity Research Analyst with Rutberg & Company, was bullish on fixed mobile convergence, saying that several OEMs already have initial solutions.
Answering questions from the audience, the Panel agreed that Internet Protocol is enabling Voice over IP; that it is definitely a 'win that will be broadly available in the next five years. Multi-mode and software defined radio (SDR) as well as more integrated RF ICs were mentioned as opportunities for startups. Mesh networks were downplayed as was voice recognition because of the number of players already in the space.
The RevGen Group (www.RevGenGroup.com) produced the event which was hosted by the Wireless Communication Alliance (www.wca.org).
