The Pigman Gallery presents Wasabi Comic Chic" July 15th, featuring the woodcut printmaking of Ayu Tomikawa

The Pigman Gallery presents its sixth show on Thursday, July 15, entitled Wasabi Chic Comic" and featuring the printmaking art of Ayu Tomikawa. Tomikawas art is distinctive because she incorporates unique characters into her design and uses woodcut printmaking as her method.

(PRWEB) June 24, 2004 -- Woodcut is the oldest form of relief printmaking and its process necessitates repetitive and precise slices into a hard piece of wood. This procedure demands a great deal of patience and skill from the artist and most printmakers today have abandoned this method in favor of other forms such as lithocut and monoprint.

Like most artists, Tomikawa spent many of her formative years in a self-described fantasy world. Luckily, the urge to depict her imagination in a tangible form proved to be too strong to ignore, thus beginning her career as woodcut printmaker. Her creative manifestations were especially influenced by shojo manga, a popular type of Japanese comic. Shojo Manga is a feminine answer to the typical male-oriented, action packed adventure that one thinks of in terms of Japanese comics, thanks largely to the popularity of the cross culture phenomenon anime. Shojo manga focuses on emotive themes and features strong female characters facing problems that Japanese women can relate to. Tomikawa expresses some of these themes in her art in a subtle and though-provoking manner.

So join us in celebrating Ayu Tomikawas art on Thursday, July 15 from 6-10 PM. To accompany her art we will have sake, snacks and two live bands, Bossa Nova Band and Dolly Rocker. The event of course is free; but we are accepting donations for a mural restoration project at the Hunter's Point Youth Park Foundation.
