(PRWEB) June 27, 2004 -- South Korea police arrested Thursday seven pharmacists who bought and sold fake erectile dysfunction drugs under the name of Cialis and Viagra. 113 others pharmacists were booked without physical detentions.
Police also arrested 2 people identified as Choi and Kang. They are suspected of selling over 9,500 Cialis and Viagra fake pills to South Korean pharmacies. The pills are manufactured in Russia and China and distributed to pharmacies in Seoul and Kyeonggi provincial areas.
They are suspected of smuggling the fake Cialis and Viagra pills through peddlers, who make frequent overseas trips, and supplying them to pharmacies or directly selling to customers.
Another case was solved in Shenyang, China where two businessmen sold over the internet fake Viagra and Cialis pills. The prosecutor said that the two men were arrested for smuggling W100 million worth of fake Viagra and Cialis made in China and making more than 500 sales through the Internet from last February until now. The clue to their arrest was spam mail they sent to the prosecutor to solicit purchases.
Europe is also dealing with fake prescription drugs problems. In UK the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that fake Viagra worth more than 2m last year. At a conference in London, Pfizer's vice-president of glo-bal security, John Theriault, called counterfeiting "the emerging crime of the 21st century". Some counterfeit medicines may have no active ingredient and will do nothing at all. "The consequences of a patient believing they are taking a life-saving medicine such as a statin, when they are taking a medicine containing no active ingredient, are obvious and potentially life-threatening," he said.
Viagra is the first and the best known PDE inhibitor used to treat impotence in men. Viagra active ingredient is Sildenafil Citrate and can be found in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg oral tablet. Viagra is a Pfizer product approved by FDA on March 27, 1998.
