Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) July 2, 2004 -- On Saturday, July 10, 2004 (from 6 PM to 10 PM), the SPICE Movement invites the Triangle community to be at the forefront of this exciting celebration of the dynamic and diverse cultural elements inherent to the triangle community, by attending the 2004 summer kick off event at the historic Hayti Heritage Center, in downtown Durham, NC (call 919-683-1709 for directions). Ticket prices are $10 (advance), $15 the day of the event, and are currently available at the Hayti Heritage Center box office. This year, SPICE is pleased to host and feature members of the famous Florida Highwaymen. The Florida Highwaymen artists are the celebrated self-taught African American landscape painters who started painting Florida landscapes over 45 years ago. The artists took the initiative to sell their own artworks; eventually, paintings were selling throughout the state for hundreds of dollars and the artists sold thousands of artworks.

The July 10th SPICE event will also feature a silent art auction of local artists Jenee Wick (also self-taught), Shawn Etheridge, and co-founder Michael W. Hall. Crafts and goods will also be available from local vendors, including Debbie Crawford of Crawford Designs. Exotic foods, and wine tasting (provided by the African American Wine Tasting Society) will also be included with the price of admission. Another interesting element about SPICE is that it allows (if not encourages) the attendee to participate in performing. From 6 pm until 8 pm, the general public will be allowed to perform and share in creatively expressing themselves in the gallery area. However, at 8 pm, SPICE introduces the triangle community to some of the hottest spoken word, dance, and musical artists in the area.

The SPICE Groove-ment" will be hosted by resident musician, poet, and MC, Zayd Malik. MCs currently scheduled to perform include the Rap Group Nasty Fruit, the lyricist AL", MC -- IC, and Gabriel (a.k.a Pandemonium). The program also includes a gamut of various musical performances by Ms. Tameka Vick, Jazz performer Rico Cretsec (of Unity Music), and the percussion mastery of the Dejembe Orchestra. Spoken word performances will be provided by Queen Sharon and Mr. Tim Jackson.
