Conservatives are Claiming Liberal Values Perhaps without Sharing the Same Semantic Value
Conservatives claim to share the same values as their Liberal counterparts. However, there appears to be a discrepancy between the perceived meaning of the shared adjectives between these two political parties.
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) July 8, 2004 -- Tolerant, open-minded, generous and, most of all, compassionate. These are all words that have long described "liberals," at least according to the dictionary. Now, however, rightwing conservatives are claiming these values as their own.
"It seems the other side of the political aisle admires the liberal value system so much they have declared it belongs to them," says Katherine Black, author of "Idiocy: Taking Conservatives Behind the Woodshed: A Parody of Ann Coulter's Books and Right-Wing Ideology." One has to wonder if these conservatives even know the meaning of the words 'tolerant' or 'compassionate'. Conservative syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, for example, equates freethinking, open-minded, tolerant and compassionate people with traitors to our country who deserve nothing less than complete banishment.
The challenge for liberals is to reclaim these values and their full meaning. President Bush says that "priorities is our faith," yet I believe our priorities are to stay informed and learn the truth. "Laughing at the follies of conservatives is just an added bonus," shares satirist Black.
