Reading Rider Reaches Action 100s 100
Readings Ali Chambers has been registered as the 100th rider for the 23rd annual Action 100 sponsored charity bike ride, and is urging others to join him to pedal the 100 miles from Bath and Bristol to London on Sunday 29 August.
(PRWEB) July 6, 2004 -- Readings Ali Chambers has been registered as the 100th rider for the 23rd annual Action 100 sponsored charity bike ride. Leading Charity Action Medical Research is challenging riders to pedal the 100 miles from Bath and Bristol to London on Sunday 29 August.
The Charity is still looking for cyclists and aims to top last years numbers when 323 riders raised over 40,000. With Alis registration helping double the number signed up at the same time last year, the Charity is well on course to this target.
This year will be the fourth time that I have completed the Action 100 bike ride," said Ali, who works at Hamblin Water Mains. I originally registered as a personal challenge because I was keen to see if I could cycle that far. Since then, the ride has become an almost annual event for me, which I count as a great personal achievement every year."
I am by no means an expert cyclist," he added, but this one big ride a year sets me a goal. The atmosphere throughout the ride is always superb, with all sorts of people taking part. The lunch stop in Theale is a bonus too. The support as you cross the finish line, not to mention the cold beer at the bar, definitely make the ride worthwhile."
Richard Westropp, Chairman of the volunteer organising group for Action Medical Research said Ali is one of the many who get the bug and come back again. The Action 100 ride lets ordinary riders achieve something extraordinary. It may sound hard work, but its split into manageable sections. The sense of achievement of completing the ride for such a great cause is amazing."
The ride was originally designed to persuade 100 riders to raise 100 each for the Charity, which funds pioneering medical research benefiting everyone, young and old. The ride has since developed into a major annual event in the South.
Anyone wishing to take part in the Action 100 Bike ride on Sunday August 29 should contact Roy Clarke on 0117 970 6348 or visit www.action100ride.org.uk.

Notes to editors
Cyclists have all day to complete the Action 100 ride on which they are fully supported with plenty of refreshment stops, a pub lunch at Theale, and hot showers and beer available at the finish in Chobham. St John Ambulance and Avon Valley Cyclery (for bike repairs) patrol the route to support riders.
A leading national charity, Action Medical Research is improving the health and quality of life of everyone through its medical breakthroughs.
The Charity was founded in 1952 as the National Fund for Poliomyelitis Research, in response to the polio epidemic that was sweeping the country at that time. In the intervening years we changed our name to Action Research and have made breakthroughs in numerous other disabling diseases and conditions. We became known as Action Medical Research in September 2003.
Our support has been crucial in the development of life-saving polio and rubella vaccines, the artificial hip operation, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, new treatments for epilepsy, and discovering the link between taking folic acid and preventing spina bifida. Action Medical Research is currently looking for answers to a wide range of medical problems that affect all age groups. These include research into premature birth problems, pre-eclampsia, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, stroke, dyspraxia, Parkinsons disease and osteoporosis. www.action.org.uk
