Florida Governor Selects Psychotherapist to Help Promote Healthy Marriages

Beatty Cohan, veteran psychotherapist and AuthorHouse writer, has been appointed by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to his state’s Commission on Marriage and Family Support Initiatives. The co-author of the groundbreaking book on relationships, For Better, For Worse, Forever: Discover the Path to Lasting Love, Cohan brings her expertise to Florida’s effort to promote viable partnerships.

Cohan’s appointment to this prestigious group of Floridians allows her to spread the message of her book. Published by AuthorHouse, the country’s leading provider of self-publishing services, For Better, For Worse, Forever, which she co-authored with her husband, Elliot, outlines Cohan’s revolutionary ideas about evaluating a partner’s potential for a long-term relationship. It provides a proven, 10-step formula to make the assessment and has the potential to significantly reduce America’s staggeringly high divorce rate.

Her new role on the commission allows Cohan to teach more people the importance of pinpointing problems early. One of her goals is to introduce a 20-week “Rate Your Mate Before It’s Too Late” seminar for Florida students that is based on her book. Helping young people evaluate potential partners is crucial to creating stable, fulfilling marriages, Cohan says.

“My dream is that every child in the United States has an opportunity to learn the ABCs of relationships,” she says. “We’ve got to get to the root of the problem, and the root of the problem can only be eradicated through education.”

Throughout her 30-year career, Cohan has worked with patients from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Despite their differences, nearly all need guidance on choosing the right lifelong companion, she says. Bush’s appointment enables Cohan to highlight the need for a proactive approach in educating people about healthy relationships.

After serving on Florida’s Family Transition Team for a year and a half, Cohan says she is delighted to have the opportunity to work with members of the Commission on Marriage and Family Support Initiatives.

Beatty Cohan, MSW, LCSW is a nationally recognized psychotherapist with a private practice in Sarasota, Fla. She is the resident on-air psychotherapist for Tampa, Fla.’s ABC News affiliate and writes an “Ask Beatty” column for The Longboat Observer and the Doctor’s Health Journal.
