(PRWEB) July 11, 2004 -- Displaying the remarkably wide, and natural, range of her music and appeal, songs of Canadas Allison Crowe now top several download charts of Amazon.com, the worlds largest online store, in musical categories as varied as 'Alternative Rock and 'Traditional British & Celtic Folk.
"Hallelujah", Allison's passionate rendition of the Leonard Cohen song, remains #1 in 'Opera & Vocal/Hymns downloads, and, she ranks beside Tom Waits, Sarah Harmer, Howie Day and others in the upper reaches of the 'Singer-Songwriter category, at #8. Allisons version of Hallelujah" is #10 overall, among indie downloads of any genre, at Amazon.com. Four tracks from her recently-released debut album, "secrets", are among the top twenty 'Singer-Songwriter downloads including "Whether I'm Wrong", (a hit at the UNESCO-endorsed New Songs for Peace project site), at #9 and "What About You" at #11. Two Allison Crowe tracks have climbed into the top 30 list for 'Alternative Rock, alongside offerings from Pennywise, NOFX, The Distillers and other diverse acts. "Secrets (That Aren't My Own)", the title track off Allison Crowes new album, is #3 in Amazon's 'Blues/General downloads ~ sandwiched between tracks by R.L. Burnside and Grammy-winner Susan Tedeschi. Further reflecting her eclecticism, Allison's original song, "How Long", holds the #2 spot in the 'Folk Rock category, and her acapella rendition of the Irish air, "Believe Me If All (Those Endearing Young Charms)", is the #1 downloaded song in the 'Traditional British & Celtic Folk genre, ahead of talented fellow-Canadian, Natalie McMaster.
In the hurly-burly of todays music industry, it can cost tens, even hundreds, of thousands of dollars to position a song in the mainstream record charts. This puts the prospect well out of reach for original, independent, artists. The internet, however, presents an open listening field, with download services carrying music to a broad, international, audience ~ and often at no cost to the artist.
Additionally, some internet download services provide an useful computerized feature that makes it possible to know the common musical interests of people listening to an artist. In the waning days of online music provider Napster, one of the most popular services was AudioGalaxy (which now endorses the FolderShare P2P network). AudioGalaxy linked listeners of one artist with another - and, in those days, when Allison Crowe led a band, the folks who listened to her music were also downloading Jack Johnson, Pennywise, Nikka Costa, and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam).
Today, Amazon.com has a similar feature. The common musical interests of Allison Crowe listeners is less hard rock-oriented ~ consistent with her solo, singer-songwriter, course ~ though it's still uniquely diverse. The people enjoying Allisons downloads are also listening to: Leonard Cohen, Wilco, Sarah Harmer, Sheryl Crow, John Cale, Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Jeff Buckley, and Rufus Wainwright.
