New Application Aims to Bring Greater Useability to the Desktop Environment

New toolbar application provides customizable access to typical computing tasks. Scripting and plugin systems allow virtually any functionality to be programmed into an always-visible toolbar that behaves similarly to the taskbar.

Kitchener, Ontario (PRWEB) July 19, 2004 -- Lizardsoft announces the release of CustomBar, a customizable toolbar application designed to provide instant access to common computing tasks. By being always visible, just like the taskbar, important tools and information are immediately available to the user. A scripting and plugin system allows CustomBar to provide access to anything from audio player controls to dictionary look-up to specialized internal company tools.

CustomBar comes with components that include Winamp song information and controls, system monitoring, web search, online dictionary/thesaurus look-up, shortcut menus and buttons, a template copier, favorites menus, shortcuts to special Windows dialogs, and many other commonly used tools. The major sales point of this application is the open-ended nature of the program; users have the ability to create or download additional components. Additional official components are being developed and released.

CustomBar's development began in 2002 when developer Matt Inglot became frustrated with the inability to see what song was being played without having to open Winamp. This simple inconvenience snowballed into a larger realization that the modern desktop environment does very little to make the most frequent computing tasks accessible. Mr. Inglot decided to attempt to solve the problem in a unique way that would allow the user to decide what tasks and information are important to him or her.

Investigation of the habits of frequent computer users led to the conclusion that a narrow set of basic tasks such as online searches, music controls, checking free disk space, and accessing frequently used programs/web sites compromised a significant portion of computing. The result of this information was CustomBar, an always-visible toolbar that was capable of providing access to any information or functionality that was built for it.

With CustomBar frequent computing tasks are now automated or made more accessible. Both the trial and full versions come with extensive documentation on the scripting, plugin, and skin systems. User-made contributions have already appeared on the CustomBar forums.
