In a baby clothing market saturated with navy sailor suits and teddy bear prints, a new company is born. BugHouse Kids debuted June 2004 with two funky clothing lines inspired by cartoons, pop culture, and travel. Steve Lafler, a comic book artist for two decades, and Serena Makofsky, a bilingual Kindergarten teacher, designed the company’s “Fruit Salad” line of smiling, anthropomorphic fruits, and the “Kooky Critters” line starring creatures—a maraca-shaking grasshopper, a rock-and-roll butterfly, and a surfing cat—getting their groove on. The bright, original designs are screen-printed in house, on high quality cotton, in sizes ranging from newborn to 6T.

The BugHouse Kids story began with the birth of Max. Steve and Serena, the company’s co-founders, were bored by baby store offerings for their son. “We felt desperate for an alternative,” says Serena. “So we turned to our lifetime obsessions with cartoons, like Bugs Bunny and Hello Kitty, and created some joyful, colorful designs.” But the company offers more than a sense of humor; it also has a heart. Steve and Serena are dedicated to using clothing made domestically, without sweatshop labor. They also produce Nature Bugs, a line of shirts printed with water-based ink on organic cotton.
