Key Highlights of the Report:
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is the rising star for fixed line operators. In early 2004, there were around 1,850,000 ADSL subscribers in Latin America, up from 360,000 in 2001. Wi-Fi became available during 2003 in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico and El Salvador. Pay TV counts for around 24% of TV households in Latin America. Of this, 15% is cable TV, and 9% is satellite TV. The cable TV leader is Argentina, followed by Mexico and Brazil.
Towards the end of 2003, pay TV began to recover slightly, but is not expected to make a full recovery until 2005. Surging debts have forced a number of operators to restructure or file for bankruptcy. Argentinas CableVisión and Multicanal began debt restructuring programs in late 2003, while Satellite TV operator DirecTV Latin America filed for Chapter 11 in March 2003, emerging in February 2004.
