What most business leaders do not know is that training at work is beneficial up to certain level in our development. Training works when we are learning a brand new skill. The bottom line is that training does not give the results we are expecting when our goals are much bigger than just learning a new skill.

If you spent the last 10 or 20 years building your business, how many training sessions have you attended? How many training sessions have you sent your people to?
Have you attended a great training session about a subject you are passionate about, and once it is over you go back to your own way of doing things?
First of all, in most cases, there is no follow up for all the training we receive. When we attend a training session we are expected to follow up on our own. Training only works when we are learning a brand new skill.
The bottom line is that training does not give the results we are expecting when our goals are much bigger than just learning a new skill.

In college a single professor can teach over 100 students in one classroom. As we progress the classroom size is considerably reduced., graduate school classroom size is 25 or less students. It is clear the attention a professor is giving students is becoming more individualized.
If the student desires to become an expert in her field, she enrolls in a doctoral level program where the class will have 5 students. For her dissertation she will have 3 or 4 professors in her committee. The ratio of individual attention is now almost 4-1 in the students favor.
It is clear how it is difficult for the training model to include direct follow up, since there cant be individualized attention. To unlock the unrealized potential of managers and employees individualized attention from an expert is essential.
Individualized attention is just one of the benefits that coaching provides us that training cant. Coaching helps us realize our full potential. Only when we are coached can we reach our maximum capability!
