Willimantic's Capitol Theater: Transformation Complete
WILLIMANTIC, CT (PRWEB) July 24, 2004 -- Klewin Building Company, based in Norwich, Connecticut, recently completed a $13 million renovation on the former Capitol Theater, located on Main Street in Willimantic, Connecticut. The Theater, built in 1925, had been closed for almost thirty years when EastConn Regional Education Service Center proposed a complete transformation of the existing building into a Performing Arts Magnet School.
The racial and ethnic diversity of the local community makes the Theater ideally positioned for this Performing Arts Magnet School. According to David Calchera, Executive Director of the school, "In the end, the interplay between the program we desired, the history of the structure as a performing arts venue and the nature of the space available led us to focus on the performing arts."
Klewin worked in partnership with the Magnet School team, and the architectural firm to coordinate, execute, and complete this project in what, for construction projects like this one, is an extremely brief period of time. Bids were taken from over 100 vendors, including; demolition crews, steel workers, woodworkers, acoustics and seating specialists, electricians, and plumbers. Major changes made within the building were construction of corridor and stair circulation, as well as new floors within the theatre proper. The existing building was approximately 35,000 square feet in gross area. With the expansion, the gross area increased to approximately 55,000 square feet.
The renovation project was completed in just over a year. Sound unlikely? Not to Klewin or to the multitude of clients for which they have successfully completed over six million square feet of construction to date at a pace sometimes far exceeding fast-tracking;" to be coined flash-tracking."
