Program Combines TV and Classroom Learning

Treasure and Gold Coast WXEL viewers can participate in an innovative program called Stay Tuned, which combines PBS programs on WXEL and three-week mini-courses held at Barry Universitys Treasure Coast Site in Port St. Lucie.

PORT ST. LUCIE , FLORIDA (WSMG/PRWEB ) July 29, 2004 -- Beginning Fall 2002, Treasure and Gold Coast WXEL viewers can participate in an innovative educational program called Stay Tuned, which allows residents to learn from a combination of PBS programs on WXEL and three-week mini-courses held at Barry Universitys Treasure Coast Site in Port St. Lucie.

The new programs course topics include:

-- A Queens Story: Chronicle of Queen Elizabeth IIs 50 Year Reign
-- Springs Eternal: Floridas Fountain of Youth
-- The Legendary Lighthouses of the Gulf of Mexico
-- Extraordinary Birds
-- Van Goghs Van Goghs
-- Women Count: Smart about Money
-- Statue of Liberty
-- The Secret World of Sharks and Rays

According to Dianne Young, Director of Barry Universitys Treasure Coast Site, Our concept of adult education goes beyond the norm at Barry University. It should enable learners to make choices on what they want to study and help enrich their lives. Television has been such a large part of peoples daily lives and we feel that Stay Tuned allows them to take their favorite programs and put them into a social setting where they can discuss and learn more with their peers," she adds.

WXEL Television's General Manager and CEO Jerry Carr said, "We are thrilled to be working on this pilot project with Barry University and look forward to its possible expansion in the future."

The Barry University School of Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) offers bachelors and masters degree
programs developed specifically to meet the needs of working adults, with evening and weekend classes and flexible customized schedules. Transfer credits are accepted from other regionally accredited institutions. A unique portfolio program allows qualified candidates to transfer up to 30 credit hours based on professional work or community service. Credit is awarded for professional licenses. In addition to the Treasure Coast site in Port St. Lucie, ACE has many convenient locations throughout Florida.

WXEL-TV42 is licensed to the West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce market. TV42 is affiliated with PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service. TV42 airs shows serving the educational, cultural and entertainment needs of the community with acclaimed national and local programming such as South Florida Today, Ship Shape TV and Trailside: Make Your Own Adventure. In the past year, TV42 has aired more than 1,100 hours of locally produced programming.* WXEL-TV42 is a service of Barry University.
