Ushering in the new school year is National Punctuation Day on August 22, a holiday listed in ChaseÂs Calendar of Events as a celebration of the lowly comma, correctly used quotes, and other proper uses of periods, semicolons and the ever mysterious ellipsis.
Jeff Rubin, owner/publisher of Put it in Writing, a newsletter publishing company based in Pinole, CA, founded National Punctuation Day to draw attention to the importance of proper punctuation. It's a day for librarians, educators, and parents  people who are interested in teaching and promoting good writing skills to their students and their children. It's also a day to remind business people that they are often judged by how they present themselves.
ÂSuccessful people have good communication skills, and that includes knowing how to write properly, Jeff says. ÂPunctuation counts. A misplaced comma can alter the meaning of a message.Â
ItÂs not just school children that need to learn the doÂs and donÂts of punctuation. ÂIÂm stunned at how many executives and CEOs send me articles and correspondences that are poorly written and punctuated, Jeff says. ÂDid they miss a year of school? I read ad copy and see billboards that scream to be corrected. Poor punctuation knows no sociological boundaries  everyone from high school dropouts to Ph.D.Âs need help with punctuation.Â
Jeff can speak eloquently (though it may come off as good natured ranting) about punctuation and its importance in written language. He can opine about the state of the written language today, enlighten with tips for proper punctuation, and entertain readers and listeners with painfully real examples of punctuation abuse that heÂs collected during more than 20 years of newsletter publishing and 10 years as a newspaper reporter.
JeffÂs knowledge of language is wide-ranging, and his manner of delivery is refreshingly direct  with a strong dose of humor. Jeff can be reached at (877) 588-1212, or by e-mail at jeff@put-it-in-writing.com. Visit JeffÂs National Punctuation Day website (as of August 13) at http://www.nationalpunctuationday.com.
